LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Parents like Ana Cladera of Larchmont found creative ways to keep their children busy on a week where there was no school, including several stops at the Larchmont Library.
Ana, originally from Spain, has lived in Larchmont for just one year and was impressed, and thankful for all of the library's children's programs available to her daughter Gabriella, 6.
"It's a big effort to keep them entertained," said Cladera, who moved from Spain to New York City 10 years ago. "We love coming to the library in general. Every time we come we have a lot of fun."
Ana brought her daughter to the library's child-appropriate Mardi Gras Parade, organized by children's librarian Christine Hollings. Cladera felt right at home because, she said, in Spain they celebrate Carnival, a series of fiestas in late February leading up to Lent. They also attended the "Talking Drums with Kobla Dente" program.
Ana also spent some time with Gabriella in New York City, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as some friends.
The Larchmont Library held another well-attended event titled "Pirate School with David Engel", which captivated Brenda McMillan's three bucanneers-in-training Alex, Charlie and Peter. During the last school break during the December holiday, she took her boys to see Peter Pan on Broadway, introducing them to the world of pirates and scallywags.
Earlier in the week, they visited the Children's Creative Corner, on 7 Addison St., where they made bead necklaces, and other arts and crafts.
While many families went away for the holiday break, the expectant mother had to stay home because her fourth child is due this weekend.
