The repairs of these sewage leaks will lower bacteria levels in Mamaroneck Harbor and in turn will benefit Long Island Sound/.
“The quality of life that will be our legacy to the future generations is a paramount responsibility of all caring citizens,” Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Norman Rosenblum said in a statement. “Our Village, being a ‘Sound Shore’ community, is particularly sensitive to the environmental effects of flooding and pollution."
Some of the corrective actions that were taken as a result of the investigation include:
- Connecting a home to the existing swear lines. The single family residence was discovered to be discharging raw sewage into storm drains.
- An illicit discharge was discovered at a stream crossing by Harmon Avenue. The leak was sewage into the Sheldrake River, but was fully repaired.
- Investigations behind a retail food store, near its garbage containers, discovered grease and fecal coliform bacteria leaking from a garbage container. The Building Department has been coordinating corrective action with the business to effect immediate and long-term corrective measures to prevent future occurrences.
The results of these coordinated efforts are lower bacteria levels that have been provided to the Village by the Westchester County Health Department.
