MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Most of the 250 residents who took shelter from Hurricane Irene and its aftermath at the local evacuation center have either returned home or found another place to stay, said Carolyn Sherwin, volunteer spokesperson for the American Red Cross.
Tuesday morning, 19 residents remained at the Mamaroneck High School's Post Road gym, where the American Red Cross opened the community shelter 5 p.m. Saturday.
"During the day people have been going out, some going to work, then coming back at night," Sherwin said. "A lot of people have been coming in to get a break. It's a safe, dry place to stay."
The Town of Mamaroneck announced on their website Monday the shelter was winding down their operation. Sherwin anticipates the shelter will close Thursday, but has set no definite timetable.
