LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Spencer West has traveled the world talking to students about overcoming challenges and will make a stop at the Hommocks Middle School Tuesday at 7 p.m.
West had his legs removed at the age of five due to a congenital disorder of the spine called sacral agenesis. After briefly trying to use prosthetics, he decided to accept his fate and carry on life without legs.
But West won't settle for mediocrity. This June, he plans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Free the Children's sustainable clean water program in East Africa.
The program, organized by the Mamaroneck School District and all local PTAs, is for parents and children grades three and up.
