Top 10 of 2011: 9/11 Ceremony Inspires Reflection

Correction: Former town councilman David Fishman was incorrectly mentioned as a Republican in this article. He is a Democrat.

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Throughout the past week, The Daily Larchmont has recaped the Top 10 of 2011 local stories that made headlines in 2011 and provided additional updates. They are in no particular order.

Tuesday, The Daily Larchmont looks back on the tri-municipal 9/11 ceremony and the results of the 2011 general election in the Village and Town of Mamaroneck.

2) On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Girl Scouts Troop 2056 dedicated two benches that now sit in front of a 9/11 memorial in Memorial Park to inspire reflection. The dedication was part of the annual tri-municipal ceremony, where local officials did just that.

"I think the kids have to remember and learn what it was to be united as one country, one people," said Toni Pergola Ryan, trustee for the Village of Mamaroneck.

Officials speculated that 2011 would be the final year of the tri-municipal ceremony, which they said, doesn't mean the individual villages and town won't have their own ceremonies.

1) The Nov. 8 general elections delivered an all-Democrat Town Board with Democrat Nancy Seligson replacing the Republican Town Supervisor Valerie O'Keeffe, who retired after completing her fifth term.

Democratic Council member David Fishman decided not to run for re-election, while Democrat Abby Katz was elected to the board, and Democrat incumbent Phyllis Wittner was reelected.

In the Village of Mamaroneck, the board of trustees was left unaltered by election results.
