Top 10 of 2011: Mamaroneck Ranked 60th in US

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Throughout the next week, The Daily Mamaroneck will recap 10 local stories that made headlines in 2011 and provide any available updates. They are in no particular order.

Today, The Daily Mamaroneck looks back on CNN Money Magazine ranking Mamaroneck 60th on its annual 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S. list, as well as the Town of Mamaroneck's 350th Anniversary.

8) In September, CNNMoney Magazine released its annual 100 Best Places Live list, ranking Mamaroneck 60th among 100 towns with a population of 50,000 or less. Job opportunities, fiscal strength, quality of schools, safety, health care, cultural and outdoor activities and even the weather were factors in the decision.

Many residents noted the community's growing dining life, especially along Mamaroneck Avenue, and its outdoor events. At a recent Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees meeting, Police Chief Chris Leahy mentioned there isn't another community that puts on more outdoor events than Mamaroneck that he has seen.

Mayor Norman Rosenblum often touts the ranking at board meetings, just as recently as Dec. 19, while discussing the proposed first annual Sound Shore St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Mamaroneck in 2012. That would be added to the Mamaroneck Shares four charitable block parties held annually during the summer, the Fireman's Day Parade and Carnival, the Car Show, Harborfest, the Turkey Trot, Halloween Spooktacular, and several other events throughout the year.

7) The Town of Mamaroneck celebrated its 350th anniversary Sept. 18 with a parade that touched all three municipalities, ending at Memorial Park with a picnic, Zumba dancers and historical slideshows.

The parade and picnic capped off a weekend of events, including a historical Story Walk that gave children an idea of what it would have been like to live in Mamaroneck and Larchmont when it was founded in 1661. The library also featured a colonial stories and crafts program Sept. 16, followed by a softball game between the village and town fire departments.
