Top 10 of 2011: Vegas Man Charged in Bank Robbery

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Throughout the next week, The Daily Mamaroneck will recap 10 local stories that made headlines in 2011 and provide any available updates. They are in no particular order.

Today, The Daily Mamaroneck looks back on the July 29 attempted bank robbery at the Chase branch on Mamaroneck Avenue, as well as the July 12 apartment fire over Nan's Gift and Party Shoppe.

At approximately 12:31 p.m. on July 29, a man entered the Chase branch on 101 Mamaroneck Ave. and passed a note to a teller demanding money . Less than seven hours later, police arrested Maximillian Conley Kvetan of Las Vegas, and charged him with third-degree robbery and third-degree possession of stolen property.

Kvetan reportedly fled by foot with $5,308.00, all of which was recovered. No one was injured during the incident.

The 29-year-old Vegas man is currently being held in county court pending a trial. He is expected to plead guilty, according to the county clerk's office.

Flames engulfed a second-floor apartment above Nan's Gift and Party Shoppe the morning of July 12 , displacing the resident and forcing the store to temporarily shut its doors.

The fire, which a bystander caught on camera , started in Barbara Mendolia's kitchen when a stove-top flame caught one of her window curtains.

She was one of three residents rescued by police and firemen. A 60-year-old man was taken to Sound Shore Hospital, but no one was reported injured. However, Mendolia's pet cat, dog, rabbit and three birds were killed in the fire.

Although the fire was contained to the second flood apartments, Nan's Gift and Party Shoppe suffered extensive water damage and was forced to shut down. It re-opened in October.
