MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Mamaroneck Daily Voice will head into the new year by counting down, in no particular order, the Top 10 headlines from 2012 .

Hurricane Sandy blew into town in October, wiping out power across Mamaroneck and forcing the evacuation of some coastal neighborhoods.

The fierce winds and heavy rains crashed into the town for more than a day, taking down wires and causing coastal flooding across the town.

A temporary shelter was opened in the high school to house displaced residents. Schools were closed for a week while the town cleaned up the mess.

An estimated 7,258 out of 13,963 customers in the town and village of Mamaroneck still were in the dark the day after the storm, according to Con Edison reports.

It took a more than a week to restore power to all customers in Westchester.

Lights were not the only problem. Lack of power meant long gas lines and shortages in stores that took weeks to straighten out.
