BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Bronxvilles Gene Westmoreland translates his lifetime of golf into an entertaining and fun look at the game in his recently published book, A Game for Life: Golfs Rules and Rewards.
Id like to think (the book) might attract nongolfers who respect a game in which behavior, dress, honor, etiquette and social skills still play an important role, said Westmoreland, who is a member of the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck. My goal is to entertain, while educating golfers.
One of the foremost experts, the former Metropolitan Golf Association tournament director details his love of golf and its rules. According to Westmoreland, A Game for Life blends humor, stories and rulings into one easy-to-read volume that helps golfers and spectators interpret often-misunderstood rules.
A Game for Life is filled with anecdotes compiled from Westmorelands teenage experiences as a caddie through his career leading and growing the MGAs tournament department. Westmoreland has served on USGA committees and has been a rules official at several major championships, giving him a front-row seat to rules situations involving the best players in the world.
At most levels of tournament play, you would find a significant difference in the behavior of tournament players versus the casual player, Westmoreland said. Competitive tournament players are so focused on scoring that socializing (which is one of the biggest rewards for recreational players) is left until the round is over.
The author said competitive golfers are sticklers for the rules and etiquette, and are always careful where they stand and careful not to make noise or move when a fellow competitor or opponent is playing.
Having worked with Gene for more than 25 years, there is no one more passionate or knowledgeable about the game, said MGA Executive Director Jay Mottola. I am so glad he finally put his many great stories and experiences down on paper for all to learn from and enjoy.
