PELHAM, N.Y. Karen Gardner will ride her bicycle through the Canadian Rockies this August to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research. She must raise $3,500 and will continue her quest with a fundraiser at Café Mozart in Mamaroneck on Wednesday. She held an event at Lola's Tea House in Pelham last month .
Gardner has raised slightly more than $2,500 for the Accelerated Cure Project, which she said differs from other MS organizations in that the ACP specifically earmarks its funds for research for a cure.
Gardner said the ACP uses blood samples with MS and genetic tests to try to discover the still unknown cause of the diseases. Their research could ultimately identify targets for a cure to the disease.
"It's looking to put more and better research in the hands of researchers so they can identify the cause," Gardner said.
Peter Dama's jazz trio, Triad, will perform at the fundraiser at Café Mozart as they did at Lola's Tea House. Patrons will be able to put money in a donation jar and participate in a 50/50 raffle if they donate $10.
The Lola's Tea House event did not produce the desired turnout, but Gardner said she may not have provided enough notice to potential donators.
"The hope is that was just an anomaly," Gardner said. "Those that did show up were very supportive and I was able to get donations through a raffle I did."
Gardner has held yard sales and sent out e-mails to locals that can help her reach her goal. And all the while, she has kept the memory of her cousin, Lois, who passed away after she suffered from MS for 40 years.
Gardner knows several others who still grapple with the disease, and each one helps to motivate her.
"You get inspiration from all kinds of people," Gardner said. "I'm also inspired by the researchers and their dedication."
