MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Construction will continue under the railroad bridge on Mamaroneck Avenue for a lengthy and undetermined amount of time.
Construction has had one lane closed almost daily for the last month, forcing motorists driving south on Mamaroneck Avenue to merge left immediately before the bridge.
Metro-North Railroad workers are doing repairs on the bridge which could take weeks, if not months from what a worker was describing. They are currently replacing all the old and rusted rivets holding the metal bridge pieces together.
The workers are also repairing cracks made by trucks which have goten stuck under the bridge. During overnight work, some of the lateral bars are also being completely replaced, which needs to be done while trains are out of service.
The construction crew currently working on the bridge will move from one side to the other, starting from their present location on the southbound side and eventually moving to the northbound side of Mamaroneck Avenue. The crew has been working in the same location for about a month, which means the process may be slow.
