Young Musicians Compose, Direct Mamaroneck Show

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Anthony Dean, a sophomore at Mamaroneck High School, directed three songs and wrote another for the PACE program's only all-music production of the year, "Soundscapes."

Like Dean, of Larchmont, quite a few students wore many hats in the annual production, which opened Thursday and runs through Saturday. All three performances are in the PACE auditorium at 8 p.m.

"Soundscapes is a creative music production for the stage," said Bill Derby, music teacher for the PACE program. "It features original compositions that are actually recorded onto a soundtrack CD and sold at intermission."

Those who plan to attend the show should be prepared to be involved during at least one number, in which Dean will perform his version of a popular Internet video titled "Trololo."

"The goal of the song is to make the audience as uncomfortable as possible," said Dean, who during the number makes his way through the audience dressed as a janitor, and instead of mopping the floor, mops the audience clean.

Dean also plays base guitar in a band, Second Hand Kevin and the Garbage Men, with his friends Kyle Bokert and Alex McGrath. The two also perform in "Soundscapes" and co-directed the finale, titled "Front-Tier Psychiatrist.”

"It's a really spectacular piece," Bokert, 16, said.

Bokert added that the slogan of the annual production is that it's not a musical theater piece, but a piece of musical theater.

"The concept of the PACE music program is music as a creative outlet, and this show is a showcase of student work, original composition and student directed, and student arranged musical works for the stage," Derby said.
