Betsey Walcott Barber Barney, Former Mamaroneck Resident, 97

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Betsey Wolcott Barber Barney, a former Mamaroneck resident, died recently. She was 97.

Barney was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Brattleboro, Vt., to Frank and Ethel Barber.

After graduation from Brattleboro High School in 1935, she spent a year at Northfield Seminary before attending and graduating from Middlebury College in 1940.

Barney went on to teach in Jericho, Vt., South Hamilton, Mass., and Ludlow, Vt. She married John Stewart Barney in 1946.

They settled in Mamaroneck and raised four boys. Barney was involved in the Mamaroneck United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, played the organ and was the first woman trustee in the church's history.

She was a Cub Scout den mother and was very proud that all four sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Barney was involved in the PTA, the school board, and she played the piano for the Rye Neck High School musicals. She was active in the Woman's Club, serving as president twice.

Barney was an avid bowler, bridge player and camper. Her husband and a brother, Julian Barber, predeceased her. She is survived by her four sons, John S. Jr. (wife LaVerne), David C. (wife Kathleen), both of Mamaroneck; William J. (wife Pamela) of Casselberry, Fla., and Robert E. (husband Lawrence) of Littleton, Mass.; as well as six grandchildren, William, Melissa, Jessica, James, Katie and David Jr.

Burial will be at Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery in Brattleboro, Vt., on Thursday, Jan. 8, at noon with a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. at MUMC, 546 E. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MUMC Trustee Fund or Jansen Hospice & Palliative Care.
