Bruce Brakenhoff, 80, Ex-Larchmont Yacht Broker

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Bruce R. Brakenhoff Sr., formerly of Larchmont, died Friday, June 15, at his home in Jamestown, R.I. He was 80.

A former member of the Larchmont Yacht Club, Brakenhoff started his career in the yachting industry more than 60 years ago with Orienta Marine Dock in Mamaroneck. He was also a vice president of Northrop and Johnson. In 1967, he co-founded Bartram and Brakenhoff, a yacht brokerage firm, with a partner, Joe Bartram.

A memorial service will be held for the Larchmont native at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Jamestown Central Baptist Church in Rhode Island.

Brakenhoff grew up in Larchmont and moved to Jamestown in 1985. He was a former commodore of the Conanicut Yacht Club in Jamestown, a member of the Storm Trysail Club of Larchmont and a former member of the New York Yacht Club.

He also served as Ethics Committee chairman of the Yacht Brokers Association of America for more than 20 years and as treasurer of the American Yacht Charter Association. Brakenhoff created some of the original charter contracts, regulations and practices that are in use today.

He also served as moderator of the First Baptist Church in Jamestown and was active on its Board of Trustees, serving several terms over the years.

Brakenhoff is survived by his wife of 60 years, Noel H. Brakenhoff; a son, Bruce R. Brakenhoff Jr.; a daughter, Betsy Brakenhoff Hickey; a daughter-in-law, Mary Piccone Brakenhoff; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IRYS Museum of Yachting or Newport Hospital.
