Dr. Julia Boxer Peyser, 86, Mamaroneck Native

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Dr. Julia Boxer Peyser, a Mamaroneck native, passed away Feb. 4. She was 86.

Peyser was a teacher, theater director, speech therapist and principal.

Born Oct. 6, 1926, she graduated as valedictorian of her class from Mamaroneck High School at the age of 16. She remained a scholar throughout her life, her family said. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from New York University in 1947 and a master’s degree in education from Columbia University in 1948.

Peyser earned a Ph.D in educational psychology from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich., in 1985. She was a speech therapist and assistant principal at Norwood and Ocean Avenue elementary schools in Northport, N.Y.

She later served as principal of Kennedy School in the Penn-Harris-Madison School District in northern Indiana. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the National Education Association, Michigan Education Association and numerous educational, philanthropic and arts institutions.

She was married to Dr. Joseph L. Peyser, who passed away in 2004.

Peyser is survived by two children, Jan Ellen Peyser and J. Randall Peyser; three grandchildren, Lisa Stamm, Jason Stamm and Ben Peyser; her son-in-law, Dr. Ray Gleason; her daughter-in-law, Sherri Wolfgang-Peyser; and sister-in-law, Jeanne Kaunitz-Peyser.

A service and tribute were held Feb. 7 in South Bend, Ind. Welsheimer Family Funeral Homes handled arrangements.
