Dr. Richard Falvey, Athlete And Philanthropist, Dies

LARCHMONT, N.Y. - Dr. Richard Falvey of Larchmont and formerly of New Rochelle, died Sunday. He was born July 10, 1928 in the Bronx, the son of Leo and Helen Falvey.

Falvey graduated from LaSalle Academy in New York City and received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in 1950, where he was the first man in 25 years to have earned eight varsity letters in baseball and basketball.

After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the New Rochelle American Legion.

Upon discharge, he entered Georgetown School of Dentistry and practiced dentistry in Pelham Manor for 46 years. His son, Dr. Kevin Falvey, continues his practice.

Falvey was the loving father of 13 children: Richard (deceased), Stephen, Kevin, Catherine, Sharon, Beth Woodtli, Brian, Christopher, Daniel, Peter, Timothy, William and Matthew. He was the father-in-law of Cathia, Kate, Jennifer, Susan, Caroline, Patti, Deanna and Erin Falvey and Andrew Woodtli. He had 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Catherine Gardner, brothers Robert and Raymond, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Falvey was chairman of the steering committee that formed the first Parish Council of Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle, and a member of the Iona Prep Fathers’ Council. He was a member of the Greater New York Dentists Association, served on the Peer Review Committee of the 9th District Dental Association and was a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry.

He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Georgetown University, the LaSalle Hall of Fame, and, with his wife, the Iona Prep Hall of Fame. He volunteered at HOPE Community Services food pantry.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lloyd Maxcy Funeral Home, New Rochelle. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Church, New Rochelle.
