Longtime New Rochelle Coach, Athletic Director Paul E. Ryan, 86

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Paul E. “Coach” Ryan, a former physical education teacher, athletic director and administrator for the New Rochelle school district, died Friday, Oct. 21, in Sarasota, Fla. He was 86.

Ryan began working in New Rochelle in 1954 and retired in 1991 after a long and distinguished career coaching local basketball, football and golf teams.

He was New York state's “Coach of the Year” for golf in 1959, for basketball in 1965 and for football in 1977.

Ryan was inducted into the New Rochelle Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Devoted to the Boys and Girls Clubs of New Rochelle, he served on its board of trustees for 25 years and as its president for 10 years.

In 1977, he was the recipient of the clubs’ “Man of the Year” award.

Born on June 22, 1930, in Worcester, Mass., to Frank and Anna (Power) Ryan, he earned his master’s degree from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. in 1954.

He was a unanimous selection to the All-New England Football Squad in 1951 and again in 1952 and was co-captain of his team as a senior.

Ryan married Patricia (Mayer) on May 1, 1983.

He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle.

When the Ryans retired to Sarasota, Fla., in 1992, they joined Laurel Oak Country Club.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Ann Collamore of Georgetown; a niece, Kathy Collamore; and nephews Kevin, Frank and Bill Collamore.

Ryan was predeceased by his brothers, William and Francis.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Church of St. Patrick, at 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, Fla.
