LARCHMONT, N.Y. Nancy Sterbenz, a former longtime resident of Larchmont, died June 22 in Brookfield, Conn. after a long illness. She was 84.
A resident of Larchmont for more than 50 years, Sterbenz volunteered with various local organizations after moving to the town in 1957. She served as president of the Larchmont Newcomers Club in 1960 and was a member of the Garden Club of Larchmont, Local Involvement for the Environment (LIFE) Center and Audubon Society.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Larchmont Avenue Church.
Sterbenz was born July 25, 1927, in Sandusky Ohio. While studying at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware Ohio, she met Pat H. Sterbenz. They were married in Bay Village, Ohio, in 1949. He predeceased her in 2008.
During her career as a high school teacher, Sterbenz taught several subjects in math and science at several schools. Her longest stint was teaching Earth science at Fieldston Upper School in Bronx, N.Y.
Her family said that Sterbenz was always eager to pass on knowledge and teach. She enjoyed taking frequent nature walks with students and participated in numerous volunteer teaching opportunities. She also enjoyed golf, bridge, painting and square-dancing.
Sterbenz is survived by three sons, Frederic, Michael and William; two daughters, Anne, Edith; and five grandchildren.
