LARCHMONT, N.Y. The Rev. Stephen J. Gormley, a former Larchmont resident, died Sept. 1 at St. Camillus Care Center in Stamford, Conn. He was 58.
Born in New Rochelle, Gormley lived in Larchmont and attended Iona Preparatory School and Mamaroneck High School. He entered the seminary at age 18 and studied in Orange, Conn., and Salamanca, Spain as well as at Gregorian University in Rome.
Gormley was ordained a priest of the Legionaries of Christ in 1987. While ministering in Brazil, Gormley suffered a life-threatening auto accident at the age of 36 that changed the course of his life.
Throughout many years of recovery, Gormley continued to inspire others in his priesthood, his family said.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Niewenhous Gormley, of Greenwich, Conn.; seven siblings, Mary Lou Warren, the Rev. Eugene Gormley, Anne (Steven) Daly, Greg (Lynda) Gormley, Kathleen (Gary) Gutekunst, Philip (Nuria) Gormley and Lorraine (Michael) Lunapiena; and 16 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Claire Collier.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday at St. Augustine Church in Larchmont. John J. Fox Funeral Home handled arrangements.
