The Yonkers Police Department posted a remembrance on its Facebook page on Wednesday, the 31st anniversary of the slaying of Gary Stymiloski.

The 27-year-old Stymiloski was an officer with the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, when he was shot and killed after stopping a driver for a traffic infraction, the post said.

Stymiloski had pulled over Alex Mengel, a 30-year-old Bronx man, on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers, according to a report in 2015 on lohud. com.

Mengel shot the officer several times, took his gun, and fled in his police car, lohud reported.

Later he kidnapped and mutilated, a Mount Vernon woman, the 2015 lohud article said.

It was considered one of the most infamous murder cases in the county at the time.

He was captured trying to flee to Canada and was shot dead himself by a New York state trooper when he tried to escape when he was being brought back to Westchester, the lohud report said.

Stymiloski had only worked for the Westchester agency for three years at the time of his death, the Yonkers Facebook post said.

He was survived by his parents and brothers.
