State Police are investigating the fatal accident in which "a pedestrian was struck by an unknown vehicle, possibly a large truck," said a statement from Troop G in Bridgeport.

"The accident occurred sometime in the early morning hours on Tuesday on Interstate 95 southbound in the area of Exit 6," the statement said.

"The male pedestrian had no identification, and this investigation will remain open."

I-95 southbound was closed for a few hours midday Tuesday, starting at about 11 a.m. Traffic was diverted off I-95 at Exit 6 and re-entered the highway at Exit 5. This caused traffic jams and delays on Greenwich streets in the area.

First one lane was reopened, and then all lanes reopened as state police investigated, said the state Department of Transportation.

Traffic delays of over 7 miles were reported back to Exit 13 at the Darien/Norwalk border, DOT said.

There were also traffic jams on northbound I-95 for nearly 4 miles between Exits 3 and 6, DOT said.

State Police, Greenwich police officers and the Greenwich Fire Department were on the scene.

Anyone with information regarding any vehicles that may have been involved in an accident or possible identity of the pedestrian are asked to contact Connecticut State Police at 203-696-2500 and refer to case #17-219159.
