MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Volunteer firefighters investigated a kitchen fire in a multi-family building at 425 Tompkins Ave. in the village on Wednesday.
The fire was contained to the kitchen area which sustained extensive damage, according to Village of Mamaroneck Police.
The Fire Department's Cause and Origin team responded to the location to conduct an investigation to determine the cause, police said. No injuries were reported.
On Thursday, Fire Chief Robert Pecchia said that the fire was deemed accidental -- started by fumes from floor sealant that wasn't vented properly and combusted when the refrigerator motor kicked on.
The apartment was vacant at the time; homeowners were doing work in the apartment, Pecchia said.
"The fire had self-extinguished itself before we were even notified. Something I've never seen in my 20 years doing this,'' Pecchia said.
