Mamaroneck Murder Charge Stuns Morgado’s Lawyer

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The lawyer for Manuela Maria Morgado, the mother of a 4-year-old boy found dead in his home Monday, said he is "in disbelief" after learning that Morgado has been charged with murder.

Police said they found Morgado, 46, "semi-conscious" Monday afternoon after a family member called 911 asking that someone check on her. Her 4-year-old son, Jason, was found dead when police arrived.

Police would not release the cause of death or other details Tuesday.

Morgado was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in Mamaroneck Village Court late Monday, police said. Morgado was being held without bail at the Westchester County Jail. She is due back in Mamaroneck Village Court 4 Oct. 4th.

“I am in disbelief. There wasn’t any indication that this would happen,” said Dennis Light, Morgado’s lawyer. “There was no warning sign. It’s surreal, and I still don’t believe it.”

Light is Morgado’s lawyer in her current custody case against the boy's father, Dr. Tim Reish.

“It’s not a custody battle,” said Light, contradicting earlier published reports.

Light said Reish wanted to modify the custody agreement that was already in place to allow his son to go to pre-kindergarten at Scarborough Presbyterian Children's Center in Briarcliff Manor.  Morgado disagreed and wanted her son to go to Mamaroneck Community Nursery School.

An IEP (Individualized Education Program) showed the boy needed special needs services. They were supposed to meet in court again later this month.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said Light. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families.”
