WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. A 21-year-old man jumped off the 66 Hale Ave. parking garage Wednesday around 1 p.m. and was declared dead at the scene, Commissioner David Chong of the White Plains Public Safety Department said.
As of 6:30 p.m., police have not released the mans name or where he is from. Police said they would wait until they notify his next of kin. Chong said the police department is investigating this as a suicide.
Employees leaving work Wednesday afternoon at the Westchester Mall peered down the overpass to the parking garage where the man landed.
David Santana of Mamaroneck heard the news from a shocked co-worker who he said saw the body covered in blood while passing their Hale Street-side window. They work at Readers Digest on the 17th and 18th floors of The Westchester.
"At first you don't believe it, you're sort of in shock," he said "But when you see it, it's totally different. Then to find out he's 21 is just a shame."
Like many of those walking through the overpass, searching for signs of the incident, Santana and his co-worker Matt Florence wondered, "What would possess him to do that?
