SCARSDALE, N.Y. - A wanted man with seven suspensions on his driver's license and a warrant out for his arrest is facing charges in Scarsdale after being busted by police over the weekend.
Officers conducting speed enforcement at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Saturday on the Bypass in Scarsdale were on patrol when they spotted a black Mercedes with Connecticut license plates traveling more than 60 mph. Police also noted that the vehicle had a dark tinted rear license plate cover that made it difficult to read the plate.
After following the vehicle for a time, police conducted a traffic stop on Weaver Street. During the stop, the driver, 25-year-old Florida resident Ashani Lewis was unable to provide a driver’s license and instead produced a Jamaican license.
Police said that after some investigating, it was determined that Lewis’ driving privileges had been suspended seven times and there was a warrant out for his arrest from the NYCPD Warrant Section-Central Warrant Unit for criminal possession of marijuana. Lewis was arrested and the vehicle was turned over to the passenger, who was the registered owner.
Lewis was charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was also cited for speeding, operating a motor vehicle without a license and a license plate display violation. The NYCPD was contacted, but told police they wouldn’t be able to retrieve Lewis for several days. Lewis was released on $250 bail and is due back in court later this year to answer the charges.
