In 2016, the department responded to more than 52,000 calls for service - a 4.2 percent increase from 2015 - and crime is at its lowest rate in more than five decades. New Rochelle showed the lowest amount of Part 1 - murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft and larceny - since 1961.

New Rochelle saw a 15-percent decrease in burglaries and a 19 percent increase in burglary arrests. The department boasted that larceny is at its lowest rate in 23 years. Nationally, New Rochelle ranks in the top 20 (17th overall) of safe cities with a population between 80,000 and 99,000.

Additionally, in 2016, six police officers were certified as instructors of the Youth Police Initiative (YPI) and conducted four five-day sessions. The department also implemented the Red Light Camera Program “to increase safety at some of the city’s busiest intersections.”

“We are very gratified that the low crime rate continues for New Rochelle” said New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll. “We are especially proud that our policing and education efforts have reduced burglaries and increased burglary arrests.”

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson praised the police department for having the lowest crime rate in 56 years.

“I commend the outstanding work of our men and women in blue, who, working in partnership with our community, have helped make New Rochelle one of the safest cities in our state.”
