The early dismissal at Staples High School in Westport on Tuesday came after a student had threatened to shoot a teacher and had thoughts of executing a mass shooting, police said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The student who overheard the threats reported them to school officials, who were interviewing the student at the time police arrived on campus at around 9 a.m.

Detectives found firearms at the home of the student that belong to the father of the student and were reportedly locked in a safe.

The student is now being evaluated at a medical facility as the investigation of the incident continues.

The early dismissal came after "information that has been uncovered during the school day," according to an email sent by the Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer.

The email, which was sent to the school community shortly before schools were dismissed at 1:15 p.m., did not provide detail on the unspecified threat.

It said "there is no known threat at this time" but that the early dismissal was ordered "out of an abundance of caution due to some information that has been uncovered during the school day."

The email stated students and staff were asked to shelter in place prior to the early dismissal.

Westport Police responded to the campus early Tuesday afternoon and remain there. Police have not yet provided information on the situation.
