Shortly before 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning, members of the Mount Vernon Police Department were dispatched to South 10th Avenue when they received reports of a stolen cell phone that was being used in the city.
According to officials, the phone led police from Mount Vernon and New Rochelle to a taxi cab with four male occupants. Upon arrival at the scene, police said that officers viewed a handgun in plain view on the floor of the cab, prompting three of the occupants to flee. The fourth, a 20-year-old from the Bronx, remained and was arrested at the scene without incident.
Mount Vernon police said that the stolen cell phone, an iPhone, was tracked down using location-tracing software within the device, with an assist from the New Rochelle Police Department, where the phone was allegedly stolen.
The 20-year-old who was apprehended reportedly is a suspect involving robberies in New Rochelle, Yonkers and Hastings-on-Hudson.
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas said that at the time, it is not yet known if this incident is related to a fatal shooting in the city earlier that morning. He announced that there will be a 2 p.m. press conference at City Hall to announce “strategic investments in public safety.”
“Modern technology has made 21st century policing more efficient, more collaborative and given better results,” Thomas stated. “The people of Mount Vernon deserve a police force that is equipped with the tools necessary to get the job done, and, as mayor, I will not rest until the department is fully supported.”
