GREENWICH, Conn. — Greenwich police rescued a kayaker close to hypothermia who had fallen out of his kayak in the frigid waters of Long Island Sound on Saturday.

In a release posted on the Facebook page, Greenwich police said they received a Mayday distress call over the VHF radio Channel 16 that a kayak was in the water due north of Great Captain's Island.

When Sgt. Sean O’Donnell and Sgt. Michael O’Conner Sr arrived via Police Boat 125, they located the kayaker in distress along with two other kayakers about 200 yards north of Great Captain's Island.

The kayaker who had been in the water was partially aboard a kayak and appeared to be potentially hypothermic and exhausted, police said.

The officers removed the kayaker from the water/kayak and transported him to Indian Harbor Yacht Club, where Greenwich Emergency Medic Service (GEMS) was waiting, police said.

He was treated and rapidly transported by GEMS to Greenwich Hospital with a low body temperature, police said.

The kayaker was treated and later released from the hospital.

The other two kayakers were able to paddle into Byram Harbor without any further incidents, police said.

Greenwich Police cautioned people about the dangers of adverse weather conditions, noting that kayakers and others who are out on the water should realize that falling into the water in cold weather can be fatal.

Police urged people to be careful and safe when choosing an adventurous afternoon and provided a link for information on kayaking safety.
