According to several published reporters, the fire, which occurred in the Midwood section of the borough, was caused by a malfunctioning hot plate.

The children's mother and their 14-year-old sister were the only survivors. The seven children, four boys and three girls, were found in a bedroom in the rear of the house, according to NBC New York.

It was New York City's deadliest fire since March 2007, when 10 people, including nine children were killed in the Bronx.
