Sarmad Khojasteh, a Bedford attorney, announced he is running to represent the 37th Senate District set to be vacated when Senator George Latimer becomes Westchester County Executive.

Khojasteh is the first Republican to announce his candidacy. Four Democrats, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick and teacher Kat Brezler have also entered the race. A date for a special election has not yet been called.

Born in Iran, Khojasteh emigrated to the United States in 1982 growing up in Poughkeepsie. Khojasteh said elected officials are too concerned with proposing legislation to win political points rather than helping constituents.

“Our campaign for Senate will be focused on making New York a great place to raise a family, start a business, and, ultimately, retire – for all New Yorkers,” Khojasteh said. “We will be running to promote policies that help hard-working New Yorkers achieve financial security and upward mobility, with a focus on education reform, home affordability, and small business entrepreneurship.”

The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.
