Andres Bermudez-Hallstrom, 29, is running for a second term. Unlike his two fellow Democratic incumbents, he was not endorsed by the Mamaroneck Democrats, which instead went with political newcommer David Finch.
Bermudez-Hallstrom, an attorney and Civil Air Patrol captain, decided to primary for the Democratic nomination. He is a former Member of the village's Flood Mitigation Advisory Committee, former emergency medical technician/EMS operations manager, and emergency radio operator at the Mamaroneck Disaster Shelter during the 2007 Nor’easter.
Why would you be a good representative in the coming term? I have a unique mix of public service, leadership, governmental, and legal experience. It is imperative for trustees to have the ability and willingness to lead and to make decisions when required. Trustees must also have a grasp of the law and basic concepts of government in order to be effective and act within the bounds of our Constitutions. What is the biggest issue facing the village and how would you address it if elected? I believe the biggest issue is flooding, because it puts lives, property, and our tax base at risk, and keeps Mamaroneck from reaching its full potential. We must support the Army Corps of Engineers project and see that it gets implemented without unnecessary delay, because lives and livelihoods depend on it. Has the local government made any mistakes or had any oversights during your term? How do you plan to avoid them going forward? The lack of emergency announcements in Spanish has been a significant oversight. I am also concerned about the lack of trust some members of the board have in our staff and volunteer experts. Trustees shouldn't pander to the political extremes, nor arrogantly and rigidly assume they are experts in every field required for running a village. What specifically makes you different from your opponent? I am different from my opponents because I am running for re-election out of a desire to serve. I do not seek office because I am upset about something, or trying to protect a personal or special interest, or because I don’t like the people currently serving. I am running so that I can be of service to the people of Mamaroneck.
