Kat Brezler, a White Plains resident who teaches in The Bronx, announced her candidacy for the 37th Senate District, running as a Democrat. The seat became open once Latimer defeated Astorino for Westchester County Executive. A special election has not yet been called.

“From my anti-fracking and environmental issues activism to fighting for sound education policies both in the classroom and out, I am proud of the work I have been able to accomplish, but I know that to bring further results, it must be done from Albany," Brezler said.

Brezler pledged not to take donations from fossil fuel companies and said campaign finance reform will be a top priority. As a teacher, Brezler was part of the movement to get parents to opt-out of having their students take school tests.

“I can no longer watch as Albany and D.C. politicians slash our education budgets and write policies divorced from the reality of what the real practice in education is," Brezler said. I want to highlight the issue of implicit bias both in testing and in teacher ratings and make sure that public schools receive the funding that is crucial to educating the future of our community."

If elected, Brezler said she plans to make healthcare a priority for her district and wants to see the New York Health Care Act passed.

"We must place people before profit and work towards progress for our state and district," Brezler said.

The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe.
