Democrats Leon Potok, . Andres Bermudez-Hallstrom and Ilissa Miller will serve on the Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees after defeating Republicans Michael Sudano, George Belsito and Dennis Cucinella.
"We hope to work together with the Mayor, the incumbent trustee and village employees to make this a better place to live," Potok said.
"It's an honor and overwhelming all at the same time," Miller said.
Incumbent Village Justice Daniel J. Gallagher, a Democrat defeated Republican challenger Jennifer E. Bienstock-Cohen by a wide margin, according to tallies by Democrats Tuesday night.
The trustees race centered on taxes, flood mitigation and parking. Both sets of candidates proposed identifying alternative sources of revenue to help mitigate the property tax burden for residents through parking. The Republicans advocated Republican Mayor Norman Rosenblum’s proposal for additional parking, while the Democrats advocated extending parking hours and installing multi-space meters.
Democratic candidate Potok recently clashed with the sitting Republican mayor, who said on LMC-TV’s “Meet the Candidates" series that Democrats “want to cut the police department by 30 percent.” The Westchester County Fair Campaign Practices Committee ruled the statement was false, although the mayor stood by his remarks.
“They have misrepresented our position on budgeting, according to the Westchester County Fair Campaign Practices Committee, and continue to repeat these untrue statements after the public finding by this independent committee,” Democratic candidate Leon Potok told The Mamaroneck Daily Voice.
Potok made the statement in April while serving as the chairman of the village budget committee. Bermudez-Hallstrom is a member of the village flood mitigation advisory committee, and Miller was a member of the village Mamaroneck Avenue Task Force.
On the Republican side, Sudano served as village trustee from 1997 to 2000, Belsito is a retired Westchester Joint Water Works employee and Cucinella serves on the village board of architectural review and, formerly, the zoning board of appeals.
The winners replace three Democrats, all of whom decided not to run for re-election.
