Mamaroneck Rivers To Be Eyed For Bacteria Sources

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Village of Mamaroneck sent out an e-mail notification Wednesday warning residents that a consulting firm will be testing the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake rivers for fecal coliform bacteria.

According to Assistant Village Manager Daniel Sarnoff, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a study in 2010 and 2011 and notified the town that high levels of the bacteria were found in local rivers, including the Sheldrake and Mamaroneck.

The bacteria could be from animal waste, damaged sewer pipes or other sources, and it is the village’s responsibility to figure out where the bacteria are coming from, said Sarnoff. The village has contracted Malcom Pirnie/ARCADIS to conduct the survey.

The email sent to residents this morning stated, “Access to the river and outfalls will be required and may at times necessitate passage through private property.”

The study will be conducted between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Aug. 30 to Oct. 31.

If residents have questions they can contact Kevin Hogan of Malcolm Pirnie/ARCADIS at 518-250-7306 or Village Manager Richard Slingerland at 914-777-7703.
