Mamaroneck Superintendent Is 'Person Of The Year'

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Town of Mamaroneck Superintendent of Highways Louis Martirano recently was named “Person of the Year” by the Westchester County Association of Municipal Public Works.

“I’m very happy to win the award,” Martirano said. “It’s kind of a prestigious award to win from your peers.”

Martirano has had a long career in public works, construction and management. After working for his father’s construction company for years, Matirano entered the public works field in 1982 when he was hired by Westchester County Department of Public Works as an engineering technician. He's had numerous positions with the county throughout the years before transferring to local municipal management for the Village of Tuckahoe in 2001. It was then that Martirano joined the association and became education chair of its board, followed by the appointments of board director and program chair.

He moved into privatized construction management for a few years, but came back to municipal management after being hired by the Town of Mamaroneck in 2008. Now, he is responsible for the daily operations of the town’s road infrastructure and fleet maintenance. He also oversees 27 staff members, including the town engineer, with an annual budget of more than $3.5 million. Martirano serves on the town’s safety, emergency management and tree committees.

“WCAMPWA neglected to mention that Lou is also an incredibly treasured employee and a wonderful, wonderful superintendent of highways for the Town of Mamaroneck and that is what we really appreciate him for. His great work ethic, and his wonderful camaraderie and attitude are well appreciated,” Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson said at the town’s Aug. 8 board meeting.

The list of Martirano’s involvement in public works and career achievements continues. He is also a member of the Westchester Putnam County Association of Town Superintendent of Highways and the American Public Works Association. He currently is president of the South East New York Branch and Vice President-Elect of the New York Metropolitan Chapter of the American Public Works Association and has been appointed to serve as one of five people on the national Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector Council.

“It feels good to be acknowledged by your peers,” Martirano said. “But there are many other officials that are out there who have not been recognized yet for their work and I am very fortunate and proud to win this award.”
