MAMARONECK, N.Y. Dog owners can continue to walk their pooches in parks for one more year now that the Village of Mamaroneck's Board of Trustees has extended the Dogs in Park Law.
We got positive feedback from the harbor master, Mayor Norman Rosenblum said at Monday nights meeting.
The law, which allows dogs to be walked on the West Basin of Harbor Island anytime and in the whole park from 6 to 8 a.m., was slated to be a trial run for one year between 2011 and 2012. This resolution allows that law to be extended until 2013.
Not everyone on the board agreed. Trustee Sid Albert voted against extending the law.
I have a problem with dogs in parks, he said at a board meeting June 11. I have no problem with dogs. I just feel that people who are walking their dogs dont pick up after them.
The dog-licensing fee in the village has been increased to $25 to cover the cost of providing extra wastebaskets for pet owners.
The Board of Trustees created an ad hoc committee in June 2011 to consider all of the positives and negatives with allowing dogs in village parks. It recommend that the Dogs in Park Law be created and used for one year on a trial basis. That initial year ended this June.
