Survey: Mamaroneck Supports Police, Fire Mergers

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – A plurality of residents in the Town of Mamaroneck and the villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont who took part in a townwide survey over the summer would like the police departments and the fire departments merged, according to survey results presented Wednesday night to the Town Board.

Betty DiMaria of Aras Performance Group gave a presentation showing the final results, for the first time, of the survey broken down into specific categories.

“The Town Board has been getting pieces of this survey throughout the past weeks,” said Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson.

Overall, 34.9 percent of survey respondents said they wanted the police departments to be unified, which was the leading total, DiMaria said.

In the Town and Village of Mamaroneck, the largest number said they want the police departments to be merged, but in Larchmont the largest number chose to answer “whoever would do the best job.”

Similar results were shown on unifying the fire departments: 32.9 percent of residents overall choose in favor of merging the three fire departments into one. But when the results are broken down, both the Town and Village of Mamaroneck choose in favor of unifying, but the Village of Larchmont again choose “whoever would do the best job,” DiMaria said.

Also, the survey indicated that the top reason residents live in the town is the close distance to New York City. And the survey said that in 2025 most residents want Mamaroneck to be known as a better place to live.

All the final survey results and a PowerPoint presentation that DiMaria showed the board are to be posted Thursday on the town website.
