Ardsley Broker Navigates Process Of Senior Living

Exploring the different options for independent and assisted-living facilities, nursing homes and retirement communities available in Westchester can be overwhelming for many aging residents. That’s why Debra Tricarico, a licensed associate broker for the Houlihan Lawrence office in Ardsley, is here to help you navigate the process of senior living.

Here are her four tips for easing your transition:

REVERSE MORTGAGES:

"For people who are 62 years and older and are struggling with paying bills, a reverse mortgage might be available under a federal program offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development," she said. "What that means is that eligible homeowners can access a portion of their home equity by receiving monthly payments over their lifetimes. This option is not for everybody, but can work in many cases. Contact me to learn more."

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:

"Assisted-living facilities and elder care can get expensive, but there are monies available to help pay the price," Tricarico said. "My father was in the military and active during wartime, for example, so he was eligible for government funding to contribute to his care. There are also programs that can help pay for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care, so ask social workers about what kind of programs are available."

USE YOUR REALTOR:

"If you are selling your home and are planning to downsize, it is in your best interest to use your Realtor’s expertise to make sure it’s priced right," Tricarico said. "The Realtor can also help you sell the furniture you no longer need by organizing an antique auction, etc. Then I might direct you to a 55-and older community like Sutton Manor Condos in Mount Kisco, Christie Place Condos in Scarsdale or Jefferson Village Condos in Yorktown."

NEARBY INDEPENDENT AND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES:

"There are assisted and independent living facilities all over Westchester and Fairfield County, Connecticut," Tricarico said. "For those looking to move into an assisted living facility, which offers supervision of daily living activities and health care services, I might suggest The Osborn in Rye or the Atria Briarcliff Manor. On the other hand, if I'm working with a senior who does not yet need that assistance but is still looking to enjoy the benefits of a community environment, the Atria on the Hudson in Ossining and the Atria Woodlands in Ardsley are great independent living communities to consider."

"Atria on the Hudson in Ossining, Atria Woodlands in Ardsley, Atria Rye Brook, and the Atria Briarcliff Manor are a few great options I might suggest to clients."
