The residence, at 6 Helena Ave., was constructed by New York City homebuilder Hartley Haigh and was used as the Haigh family’s summer house for over 50 years, passing in 1911 to Hartley Haigh’s son, builder and seaman William Haigh. The home is built in the style of the mansard-roofed buildings constructed in France during Napolean III’s mid-19th-century Second Empire, which borrowed from popular elements of Italianate-style architecture.

Featured on the Larchmont Historical Society’s Spring House Tour of 2004, the Haigh Cottage is situated across the street from Larchmont Manor Park, Manor Beach and the Horseshoe Harbor Yacht Club.

In addition to the residence’s center-wing mansard roof, notable architectural aspects consistent with the Second Empire Victorian style with Italianate elements include decorative brackets that support the eaves, a central pavilion, original paired entry doors, and windows including arched or curved dormer windows, a one-story bay window and a round window facing the street.

The residence has 5,974 square feet on three floors, with six bedrooms, three full and two half baths, two studies that can be used as additional bedrooms and ten-foot ceilings throughout. Living spaces include a sunroom with views of Larchmont’s Horseshoe Harbor and Long Island Sound, entry hall with oak-paneled elevator, library with gilt molding and faux marble fireplace, formal dining room with large window bench, wood-paneled family room, kitchen equipped with high-end appliances and living room with beamed ceiling, parquet floors and marble fireplace. A second-floor master suite with views has a wood-burning fireplace, his and hers dressing area, and master bath.

“In the heart of prestigious Larchmont Manor, this home has glorious water views and exquisite period details throughout its spacious, sun-drenched rooms,” said Hardy. “It is no wonder the property is one of the most admired Victorians in the area.”

On the outside, the home features a slate roof with wrought-iron widow’s walk, wide-planked wood clapboard siding, a wraparound porch with wood-lattice exterior surrounds, and a two-car detached garage and stone parking court. The house resides on a .27-acre, professionally landscaped lot with flowering shrubs, rosebushes and tall trees.
