New Canaan OKs Money for 3 Cop Cars

Police Chief Ed Nadriczny is on the road to getting the new police cruisers he wants. The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday to approve a special appropriation of $70,395 to purchase three Ford Crown Victoria vehicles that Nadriczny says are needed to overhaul an aging fleet.

The chief had initially asked for more than $125,000 to purchase five vehicles for the police department. Nadriczny will request the funds for the other two cars in the police department's 2011-12 budget request.

"This was a way to work with the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance to get what we need and minimize the impact," Nadriczny said.

New Canaan Police usually replaced two vehicles a year after three or four years of service, but the department replaced only one in each of the last two budget years as departments cut spending.

Nadriczny needs approvals for the cars from the Board of Finance and Town Council. Nadriczny plans to order the cars by March 1, a deadline he must meet because Ford Motor Co. plans to stop producing the Crown Victoria this year.

Do you think the town should spend money this year on new cars for the police department? Or could this be put off? Leave a comment below.
