Peekskill Man Hit On Nelson, Injuries Minor

A 53-year-old Peekskill resident suffered minor injuries after he was struck by an SUV while crossing Nelson Avenue Friday. The pedestrian was struck by a silver Toyota SUV that was turning from Main street onto Nelson at about 1 p.m., according to Peekskill Police Spokesman Lt. Eric Johansen.  “The guy was crossing Nelson Avenue from east to west and a vehicle was making a turn onto Nelson and had view obstructed by a box truck which had just passed,” Johansen said.  Police, EMS and firefighters from Peekskill and Cortlandt arrived at the scene shortly after and the victim was taken to nearby Hudson Valley Hospital Center.  Johansen said the car was not going fast since it was making a turn after being stopped at a traffic light.  The slow speed is likely the reason the victim received only minor injuries, he said.  Johansen said the busy intersection is one of the more pedestrian-friendly in the downtown due to the traffic lights and numerous crosswalks in the area.  “The fact that there’s a mid-block crosswalk with a stop sign really does slow traffic down to create a for the most part pedestrian-friendly area,” Johansen said.
