Memorial Tourney Remember's Ossining's Federico

OSSINING, N.Y. -- In his 20 short years, Christian Federico was a stunning athlete, an honor student and an inspiration to many of his peers.

And his legacy grows.

An Ossining High School scholar/athlete, Federico was a standout football and baseball star and captain of both teams at Ossining High, which he graduated from in 2008. His dream was to attend the University of Maryland.

While attending Maryland Federico died suddenly while jogging on April 30, 2010.

On Saturday, Federico’s family and friends will hold the Second Annual Christian Federico Memorial Softball Tournament in his honor, raising funds for a scholarship established in his memory. The event will be held at Redmond Field on Cook Avenue in Yonkers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Federico was born and spent his early years in Yonkers.

“People have been supporting the event and last year was a big success,” said Vic Federico, Christian’s uncle. “We have teams of players from Ossining, kids Christian played with and teams from Yonkers where he played PAL baseball. Christian was a great kid, we all miss him.”

The event will feature a tournament, men’s and women’s games, a picnic and raffles that will offer prizes contributed by businesses throughout the county, including tickets to New York Yankees baseball games.

Those interested in fielding a team for the event or in contributing to the fundraising effort can call Vic Federico at 914-815-7552. There is also a Facebook page named “In Memory of Christian Federico.” Contributions may also be sent to the fund at 2 Butler Place, Ossining, N.Y. 10562.
