Yonkers Mayor Welcomes President Of Cape Verde

YONKERS, N.Y. — Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano along with the Yonkers City Council presented the president of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, with a key to the city at Yonkers City Hall on Wednesday.

Spano gave the key as gesture of goodwill to strengthen relations with Fonseca and his country, a 10-island nation in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Western Africa.

"Today was a great honor for me that President Fonseca came to our great city," said Spano. “I was happy to give him the key to the city so that he knows he is welcome back here anytime he wants to come."

Fonseca is in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday. He stopped by Yonkers, home to more than 2,000 Yonkers residents of Cape Verdean descent, as part of his trip.

“I promise to represent Cape Verde the best I can to everybody in this country,” said Fonseca. “I'm very happy to know that people from my country are integrated in the local community and society. I feel very honored to get the key to the city and now feel free to come to Yonkers and open the gates to the city anytime I want.”
