Joshua Sanchez, 24, of Ansonia was charged with possession of narcotics and possession with intent to sell. Roberto I. Cales was charged with possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell and possession o marijuana. Both posted $50,000 bonds and will appear in court Aug. 31.

This year there have been 28 heroin-related overdose deaths in Fairfield County, according to police. This does not include the numerous non-fatal overdoses that have occurred in the area, police said.

Police said that over the past few weeks the Darien Police Special Enforcement Unit developed information regarding the delivery and sale of heroin in the northwest section of town. Through their investigation they determined that Sanchez would be coming down to Darien from the Waterbury area Thursday night to sell heroin to local residents, according to police. SEU officers, along with detectives, undercover officers and a K-9 unit set up surveillance around the 500 block of Hoyt Street in close proximity to the Meritt Parkway.

Around 11 p.m. Thursday officers saw a vehicle operated by Sanchez driving southbound on Hoyt Street, with Cales in the passenger seat, according to police. A traffic stop was conducted in the area of Leeds Lane and both were detained.

According to police, Sanchez was found with 110 bags or wax folds of heroin, and $255 in cash. Cales was found to be in possession of 4.9 grams of marijuana, police said. Both were taken into custody.

Police said that Sanchez and Cales are both previously convicted felons with past narcotics history. The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
