This year, New York State selected Friday, June 23 instead of Thursday, June 22 as Regents Rating Day.

This decision allowed the District to develop a calendar that brings students back after Labor Day, builds in five snow days, and still have 185 school days (181 student days, plus four Superintendent Conference Days).

The 2016-17 school year calendar has five snow/school cancellation days built in. Should schools need to close more than five days during the school year, currently scheduled vacation days will become instructional days.

Factors that determine the School Calendar include:

New York State Education Law that stipulates:

  • Students must attend school for a minimum of 180 days
  • Students cannot attend school after Regent Rating Day (chosen by NYS, usually the last Thursday in June)
  • Students cannot attend school in July and August

Other considerations include:

  • Legal holidays observed
  • Religious holidays
  • Standardized testing/make-up dates
  • Scoring/processing time for State tests
  • AP testing dates
  • Semester "number of days" balance
  • Attendance trends (e.g. before a holiday/break)
  • Professional development days
  • Contractual agreements
