The storm ripped the roof from a partially occupied commercial building at 27th Street and Broadway in Fair Lawn (photo, below). Water poured into the building and Fair Lawn’s sub-code official was called to inspect the damage.
Nearby, a tree clipped a roof corner of a single-family house at the corner of Midland Avenue and Cambridge Road as it crashed onto an SUV (photos, above & below). No injuries were reported, but the vehicle was considered totaled and the roof required immediate repairs.
Another downed tree blocked 26th Street just south of Pellack Drive.
On Jefferson Avenue in Cresskill, a backyard tree toppled onto the house of an elderly couple who had just returned from a weekend wedding in Virginia. Down the hill in Emerson, another tree took out half of a house.
Solider Hill Road in Oradell and Emerson was closed because of fallen high-tension lines that needed repair. The road was also heavily damaged from the burning wires and will need repair work, Oradell firefighters said.
Kinderkamack Road, Old Hook Road and Dyer Avenue were among other Bergen County thoroughfares left temporarily impassable, or partly so, during the fast-blowing storm and rapid deluge.
A Westwood woman said she’d just picked up her 7-year-old son from school and was driving down Old Hook Road when the winds came, sending limbs and branch “flying everywhere and cars spinning out of control.”

A few minutes of high wins and heavy rain was all it took. Although a tornado warning was called off an hour earlier than expected (SEE: New Jersey tornado watch lifted), some areas got hit pretty hard.
A car went into a ditch on the Garden State Parkway in Montvale. A tree fell outside New Milford High School, damaging two cars.
Trees and wires were reported down throughout the county, including at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. Downed power lines forced Old Hook Road closed between Kinderkamack and Sand.
Part of Westwood Avenue in River Vale was closed due to branches across the street and on power lines. A large tree fell across Teaneck Road at Copley Avenue, blocking traffic in both directions.
Nearly three dozen inbound flights and just as many outbound flights were cancelled at Newark International Airport. Those allowed in have had reported delays of up to two hours.
