With so many options throughout the city, it can be hard to determine which shops truly reign supreme. So, we have compiled a list of the top seven sandwich shops in Boston based on Yelp ratings, customer reviews and additional press.
1.) American Provisions (South Boston, Dorchester)
American Provisions only offers the best. Whether it is artisan cheeses and cured meats or natural wine and craft beer, customers at this neighborhood shop are never disappointed.
"I love a good sandwich, and when I tell you that the Italian that they have here is the best I've ever had in my life, I mean it," one Yelp reviewer said. "Cool shop, friendly staff, lots of college students hanging out or jogging by, so it's a perfect place to eat and people watch."
Simply put, "it wouldn't be a Boston sandwich shop map without Sam LaGrassa's," Eater Boston said in an article from June 2022.
Dubbed as "the place for Corned Beef" by Yelp reviewers, Sam's features 50 different sandwiches from chipotle pastrami to chicken Parmesan.
3.) Mike & Patty's (Bay Village)
Mike & Patty's was living up to their reputation long before Eater Boston named them one of the best places for breakfast sandwiches around Boston in October 2022.
Believed to be the smallest eatery in the city, the shop has been dishing out their signature sandwiches since 2008. Favorites include the Fancy, Breakfast Grilled Crack and the Robbie.
Pauli's iconic lobster rolls have been featured on "Good Morning America" and Food Network’s "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," the store's website reads.
However, the North End staple is far from a one-stop shop. Yelp reviewers attest to Pauli's quality whether you're chowing down on a lobster roll, Italian sub or Philly cheesesteak.
Family owned and operated since 1982, Rondo's in Southie peaked when it was featured on "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations." However, the store's hype holds up to this day with Yelp reviewers praising their consistency and quality.
"By far the best Steak and Cheese Sub in the Greater Boston Area," one reviewer said. "A must-try for sub fans and Southie locals. Very homey, New England energy from the staff and owners."
6.) DJ's Market & Deli (Dorchester)
DJ's Market & Deli is known as Boston’s oldest family owned Polish market and deli, according to their Instagram, and it has stayed relevant ever since it opened in 1979.
"Great polish deli. They make excellent, hearty sandwiches that are protein heavy," the shop's most recent Yelp review reads. "Adding on banana peppers makes every sandwich pop!"
7.) Billy's Sub Shop (Bay Village)
Customers cannot stop raving about Billy's Sub Shop, which is known for their massive sandwiches like the chicken cutlet sub or the steak, mushroom and cheese. The shop is also equally known for their neighborhood atmosphere as they are for their food.
“Billy’s is awesome! It’s got that super local “everybody knows your name” feeling to it that you don’t see often," one reviewer said according to Billy's website. "The food is good and not expensive at all. Looking forward to becoming a Billy’s regular!"
