Should I Swap My Brass Hardware?

Although brass decor was fashionable in homes a decade or two ago, it's very outdated today. If you're thinking of selling your home, you might think about changing swapping it out.

It is easy and relatively inexpensive to create an updated look by replacing brass fittings with more popular dark oil-rubbed bronze or silver-tone finishes, such as nickel, chrome and stainless steel.

Take a look around your home and make a list of what should be changed. Light fixtures, including the dining room chandelier, switch plates, doorknobs and door hinges, as well as gold-colored bathroom faucets should all be changed.

• Shiny silver finishes, such as polished nickel, create a clean look and work well with formal or contemporary styles.

• Satin nickel, less shiny than polished, is a good option for kitchen faucets and lighting fixtures since this finish matches well with stainless steel appliances.

• Shiny chrome is the most popular finish and the most economical option for bathroom faucets and lighting.

• Darker browns or black finishes that create a cozy, less formal style are also popular. Look for oil-rubbed bronze or forged steel.

There are abundant choices and price ranges to fit your style and budget. So give your home a 'mini-makeover' and eliminate the brass.
