MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Schools opened Wednesday in Mamaroneck with some students reuniting after the summer and some parents struggling to say goodbye to their kids for the day.

At Murrray Avenue School, the first day of school was complicated by a construction project on the Murray Avenue side stairs, which wasn't completed in time for the opening of school due to an issue with the original contractor.

The school district postponed all work in order to allow the sidewalk in front of the school to be open for kids and to prevent bottle-necking traffic with a lane closure.

That was welcome news for Anne Randall, Murray Avenue School PTA member and mother of an incoming first- and fifth-grader.

"You take what you’re dealt with and try to make the best of it," she said.

Randall attended a Tuesday night, Sept. 2, meeting of the the Mamaroneck school board, which toured all of the schools that had capital work done this summer, including Murray Avenue. She was joined by her fellow PTA members Pam Brandman, who has a second- and fourth-grader, and Chrystal Chambers, who has a fourth-grader.

"Our concern was for the parents to know to not arrive here and think things are going to be complete," Chambers said, explaining why they attended the meeting.

Regardless of the construction, Chambers was looking forward to Wednesday.

"Excited for the kids to get back to school, for sure," she said.
